The Five R’s of the Resistance:
- Resist: Protest on the streets, call senators and representatives, etc.
- Rebel: Run for office, GOTV (Get Out The Vote), support a progressive.
- Revolt: Change the laws, change the culture, build your communities.
- Rely: Trust that millions of others are fighting the good fight.
- Rest: Take care of yourself, we are in this for the long term.
WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for VinRev’s G&G notes in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. You can find all his comments here, even today’s, once he posts it. Tech Tip: You can search for >>> in Roundups to quickly find his comments.
Poll #2:
Report on my poll about WineRev on February 11, 2024:
What do you like best about WineRev's Good and Goofy History Corner?
That was the question.
- His sense of humor 7%
- His eye-roll-inducing puns 3%
- His writing style 3%
- His folksy wisdom 1%
- His magnificent and impressive array of stories 13%
- His in-jokes and recurring WineRevisms 2%
- Oh, thank goodness, you've given me an "All of the above"! This is it 65%
- Not sure, maybe, neutral, no opinion 4%
- I don't know nothin' about polit- ... I mean, I don't know nothin’ about WineRev, maybe because I'm new here or don't read comments 0%
65% of poll participants held off long enough to find the hidden “All of the above” item. Yes, that last item quoted was a call-out to the Sam Cooke song “What a Wonderful World.” Except for the people who didn’t know his work (4%) or who voted for the shiny objects (OMG pie, smoked salmon, and something else [4%]), almost everybody who voted (92%) liked something or most things about VinhoRev’s ‘Good and Goofy Corners. Thanks again, VinoRev!
WineRev, we didn’t really need the poll to know or to tell us: We love ya’ ! ❤
I salute the wine-producing countries of the world: vino (Italy and Spain), vin (France), vinho (Brazil and Portugal). I raise a glass. Salud!

A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.

Please note that the Google Map, though convenient to operate, is visually inaccurate because, among other issues, it enlarges North America and shrinks Africa [Maps present a distorted view of the world by kos].

Tech Talk for Kosacks
- Load-More Workaround: On a desktop or laptop, to banish the Daily Kos Load More buttons, click this link, which opens the main Daily Kos page and shuts off the Load More buttons at the same time. You must Reload any open Daily Kos pages. After that, you’re good to go, but you may need to come back here and click that link again in a few weeks. According to the DK Help Desk, the “Load More” option also resets the user back to the display of the old-style, React comments.

A Little Bit About Me
Last week, I mentioned that I had written a program to help a local candidate extract text from the backend of the NGP VAN and create a database. I’ve begun making contact with local Democratic party leaders to find candidates who might need my programming services. I’m also waiting for my bank to approve my Venmo account so that that first campaign can pay me. I’m planning my first fundraising campaign from which I will earn a commission.
I used the program AutoHotkey to create that database. It’s an automatic scripting language which allows programmers to create hotkeys that play macros which automate most Windows processes, including pressing buttons and switching from webpage to webpage and from program to program.
Here’s an example of a recent AutoHotkey macro I wrote which allows me to insert a link to the current diary in a comment. I created this macro to insert such a link in the “Send an email to your family and friends” comment, which I’ve been posting in Roundups for a few days. Pressing Win + Ctrl + l automatically inserts the link at the cursor in my comment. You might be able to follow the logic of my macro, even if you cannot understand the language of AutoHotkey commands, by reading the comments, which are located on most lines to the right foot the semicolon.
(Please feel free to skip this indented geeky section.)
- #^l:: ; L is for Link: Press Win + Ctrl + l to insert a bolded link in Chrome composed of the current URL and webpage title. This macro automatically removes unnecessary characters from the diary title and the URL
- CurrentURL = ; Declare variables
- CurrentURLNoComment =
- Title =
- CurrentDiaryLink =
- CurrentURL := GetActiveBrowserURL() ; Store the current URL in the variable CurrentURL.
- StringReplace, CurrentURL, CurrentURL,#comment_,|, All ; Change “#comment_” into a | (vertical pipe), which is necessary to split the variable in 2 pieces.
- StringSplit, CurrentURLNoComment, CurrentURL,|, R ; Cut the line into 2 pieces at the |. CurrentURLNoComment1 is the necessary piece of the URL. CurrentURLNoComment2 is the number of the current comment, which we do not need, because the link must eventually open the diary at its top and not at the current comment.
- WinGetTitle, Title, A ; Get the webpage title and store it in the variable Title.
- StringReplace, Title, Title,%A_Space%- Google Chrome,, All ; Delete " - Google Chrome" from the variable Title.
- CurrentDiaryLink := <a href="%CurrentURLNoComment1%"%A_Space%target="_blank">%Title% ; Create the bolded link from the components. This link will always open the webpage in a new Tab.
- Clipboard = %CurrentDiaryLink% ; Fill the Clipboard with the link.
- Send ^v ; Paste the link.
- Sleep 5 ; Wait a bit, 5/1000 seconds.
- CurrentURL = ; Release variables to the universe
- CurrentURLNoComment =
- Title =
- CurrentDiaryLink =
- Return ; End the macro.
Please feel free to copy this macro and use it anywhere or adapt it for any purpose. I freely give it away. (If you have any suggestions about how to properly phrase a GNU license notification, please let me know.)
The macro above might seem fairly difficult, but macros can be quite simple. For instance, you could easily write a macro to type “President Joe Biden,” your name, or any common phrase:
:*:pjb::President Joe Biden
That’s all you need to insert “President Joe Biden” as text in Windows programs on your PC.
Writing AutoHotkey macros is for me a joyful, meditative, and playful process, like writing a poem, cooking something new with on-hand ingredients, designing and creating a work of art, or listening for the next sound on my flute. Pleasure with a purpose.
If you’d like to learn AutoHotkey to help you avoid repetitive tasks and increase your productivity, or if you’d like me to write AutoHotkey macros for you, please let me know.
Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! Beginners, I cordially invite you to comment once you get the lay of the land!
We all do what we can. For almost 7 years now, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind!
In May we celebrate 7 years of Good News Roundups! We’d love to hear from you about your involvement in our Roundups. What have our Roundups done for you, and what have you done for our Roundups? Ask your own questions and answer them. Write a poem or song. Paint a picture. Bless us with your reminiscences. Et cetera. Share them in May and send me a kosmail or email once you post it in a Roundup, since I cannot read all the comments in all the diaries. At this point, I have space for your reminiscences in a Sunday Roundup.
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
2thanks (he, him)
