Good evening, kibitzers! Today is my husband’s fortieth birthday. Normally we celebrate by going out to a nice dinner, typically at a steakhouse. He does not generally take off of work for his birthday; in his family, I gather, birthdays as one got older were typically celebrated with little fuss. I know there was originally a late meeting scheduled that he was planning on attending tonight; I haven’t heard anything yet, so I assume it’s still on and he will be getting home too late to go out. We will likely go tomorrow instead.
For me, with a summer birthday, I like to take the day off of work, and either go to the beach, or maybe play mini-golf, or lounge by the pool and read. I don’t like to do chores or cook on my birthday, so I typically do brunch and dinner out. My grandfather always used to give my grandmother a rose on her birthday, and when he passed, my mom took up the tradition. To this day, even though my grandmother herself passed 11 years ago, mom takes a rose up to their graves on my grandmother’s birthday.
What about you? Do you have any traditions you follow on your birthday? Do you mark all birthdays or just ‘milestone’ ones?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
As always, this is an open thread and nothing is off topic. What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
