Two weekends ago, I was at the Turtle Back Zoo, helping my best friend celebrate her children’s birthdays. When I mentioned my plans to my husband, he was surprised to learn that I’d never been to the Turtle Back Zoo, as it was a frequent target of class trips for him when he was in school. I, however, grew up in Cumberland County, NJ, in the southern part of the state. Our class trips were most frequently targeted at Philadelphia.
In first grade, we went to Sesame Place.
The main things I remember from there were the slides, and a room with these walls of light that held your shadow after you moved. (Had to go look it up — apparently that was the Shadow Room.)
Second grade was our first class trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. I remember the Monorail mostly. Their website has a whole page dedicated to zoo babies; well worth a look to brighten your day. Another place we visited more than once, though the first time was in third grade, is the Franklin Institute, founded in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Easily the most memorable attraction there is the Giant Heart exhibit, which has a huge model of a human heart that kids can crawl through. As I recall, they used to pipe the sounds of a beating heart into model as well. The video below shows the heart exhibit at the 1:20 mark if you want to skip ahead:
Someday I’d like to go back to some of these places as adults and see them through new eyes. Are class trips still a thing, I wonder? I graduated high school in 1994, and I don’t have kids, so I have no idea if class trips still happen. Did you have any memorable class trips?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
CA FIRE INFO: See FoundingFatherDAR’s diary (and thread!) for a wide assortment of information and sources, and also for folks checking in. If there’s a better source by now (I’m not at home today), please let us know.
Per marge, the Redwood Empire Food Bank is a good way to help right now, with money or donations of goods.
