Out of Chuy Garcias own mouth, he stated that there would be another strike by the teachers union if and when Rahm Emmanuel wins the mayoral election! Yes I used the word stooge, if you read that statement what would you call it?
Then on top of that, it seems that because this site obviously endorsed Chuy, any opinion divergent from that endorsement is attacked with vim and vigor. Censorship is not an appropriate way to make your point. Trying to pin labels on people also is not an appropriate way to make your point.
I was in Chicago public schools for about 75% of my so-called education. I wasn't going to do this but I felt it was appropriate considering the comments.
I was transferred to a school close to my grandmother's in the Ravenswood area. In third grade I could read at high school entry-level. That was because of my mother. She worked tirelessly on me because in those days as in today ethnicity makes a difference in your education.
The first day in that new school the teacher asked me to read. So I read the way I was taught, with emphasis and animated conviction. The teacher said that was an inappropriate way to read, she also told me I could not read that way anymore. Also because my mother taught me multiplication and division, which I could actually do in third grade, the teachers Asked me "who did I think I was?" and that I could not do work above my grade level. Also they told me they would have to reeducate me in mathematics because I was not proficient in "NEW MATH."
The teacher made me wear a baby rattle around my neck, she also had a big sheet that she fashioned into a large costume looking diaper which I had to pull on when I came in the class. Then I had to sit in the slop sink closet with the board across the sink to form a desk, at least they gave me a regular chair. I was so ashamed because I thought I was stupid, I was not aware that I looked different than the other kids in that class. Afterwards I was very aware of my differences.
After listening to Karen Lewis bloviate about Rahm right after his election, and her national smear tour, where she made extremely derogatory comments about him in public. Later on she claimed it was because he yelled at her in a private dinner meeting. Of course there was no proof this ever happened, but she made a big name for herself. He definitely has a reputation, but what better way to make your own reputation then to claim this confrontation happened in private with no witnesses.
Karen Lewis appeared before the New York Collective of Radical Educators and reminisced about her teaching days when she would lie to parents when it came time to discuss their child’s performance. She then said – because of her lies – the student became her “hostage” who would do what she wanted.
She also begged the question,“Do you have an insane principal?” she said, to laughs and clapping. “Anybody have an insane principal? Take ‘em out. What that means is remove them, by the way, Fox News, How do you do that? You organize to make their lives so miserable.” Lewis impersonated Emanuel, claimed he was as “mad as a wet hen” at her for taking the city to the Labor Relations Board over more teacher pay for a longer school day, and said she knew he was “stamping his little feet” over it.
She reminds me of the teachers I had in Chicago public school. They weren't there to teach, they were there to ridicule and manipulate and tear down.
That being said, I was able to rise above it, but I never forgot it! It made me an un-trusting and suspicious minded, angry man. There needs to be change in the Chicago public school system, it's not working. There is always resistance to change, but change there needs to be. I was a union member and representative for 32 years, my leanings are extremely liberal. Like I said in my other comment my mother-in-law lived in the South, she was subject to the poll tax, she was subject to Jim Crow, she marched for civil rights while people were throwing bags of broken glass and fecal matter at them. My mother's family suffered great injustice. Because of being Native American and African American, family members were lynched and murdered in ways reminiscent of ISIL.
I don't need someone accusing me of repeating right wing talking points. The comments about my political leanings and persuasions were ludicrous. It reminds me almost exactly of comments that were made by the wing nuts on Newsmax threads. As a matter of fact, the venom spewed at Rahm are just as vicious as many of those right-wing blog threads.
I hope you enjoy your censorship, obviously anyone who disagrees with certain candidates that this site promotes is not welcome here! You can parse it any way you like, and I'm sure you will.
