I'm a little perplexed by all this fervent commentary from the progressive community about whether Pope Francis did or did not mean to meet with Kim Davis, the self-aggrandizing moron from Kentucky.
I'm not Christian, much less Catholic, so perhaps I'm missing something, but I fail to see why this particularly matters to anyone who's not Catholic. Why all the apologias?
Do Pope Francis's progressive positions on income inequality and climate change automatically make him a progressive standard-bearer? Or is it that, being the head of an historically conservative institution, he wasn't supposed to have those positions and the fact that he does provides a valuable counter-narrative to American right-wing conservatism? A voice that conservatives themselves will perhaps listen to?
These aren't rhetorical questions. I'm honestly interested in hearing what people think.
