This short diary tries to express my feelings as I stood in line here at Vanderbilt Apartments, a senior living site for those of us with low incomes.
I worked most of my life, but had to go on Social Security early, thus losing 25 percent of what I would have received had I waited until full-retirement age. Once a month Manna Food Bank in Asheville distributes excess food to us. This was my first time to stand in line to get mine. Quite a humbling experience for most of us.
Used to be,
I wasn't one.
I helped the others,
But I wasn't one.
I cooked soup
And chopped veggies,
But I wasn't one.
I gave bags of food
To them, not me!
I was the giver
Not the receiver.
I never thought
The day would come....
When I became one, too!
