Sorry for two diaries at once, folks, but I've been busy and haven't had a chance to post recently and, well, this was too good to pass up. It concerns our favorite anti-feminist mummy Phyllis Schlafly (yes, she's still alive), who, as you can guess, is none-too-thrilled about the onslaught of gay marriage and the horrible, horrible sight of happy couples joined in wedded bliss. (This despite the fact that Schlafly has a gay son, although one who backs his mother's views.) And according to her, lots of people agree with her and are showing it with their feet.
What does she mean? Well, we've all heard stories about gay couple traveling to states that legalize gay marriages in order to tie the knot. (Some of them quite publicly, like Houston's mayor, who then told Texas critics to "get over it.") But according to Schlafly, the opposite is also happening. One her radio commentary, she had this to say:
The Court held that because the U.S. Supreme Court had recently ordered that federal benefits be granted to same-sex couples who are married under state law, the civil union law in New Jersey was inadequate to ensure that homosexual couples in New Jersey are able to receive the same benefits as married couples.
There was no dissent from the New Jersey Court’s ruling, not even by Christie’s own judicial appointments. But many Americans are dissenting with their feet, by moving away from same-sex marriage states and into the many states that continue to recognize the value of marriage as being between only one man and one woman.
Uh huh. As
Right Wing Watch, which caught this, points out:
The liberal media must be covering up this mass exodus from marriage equality states, because we haven’t heard a single story of someone doing this.
Perhaps these persecuted homophobes have set up their own Underground Railroad, stealing out under cover of darkness lest the gay/liberal/feminist hoards catch wind of them, capture them and force them to remain and watch the horrible, horrible sight of happy couples joined in wedding bliss.
OH THE HUMANITY!!!
Steve Benen chimed in as well:
They are? “Many” Americans are moving from states that extend equal marriage rights to all to states that discriminate against same-sex couples?
Putting aside why in the world anyone might actually do this, it’s worth noting that there’s literally no evidence to support Schlafly’s assertion.
About as much evidence as her belief in
this untapped reservoir of white voters that is the key to GOP electoral success instead of those damn Latinos.
Methinks it may be time for the men in white coats to pay Phyllis a visit. She's about as far gone from reality as Pat Robertson.
