Multiple diaries have already brought the (SB 1070 law) Arizona boycott into the spotlight. The recurring theme is that a boycott must be real; it must have teeth; and it must be highly visible.
Arizona felt the sting of boycott in 1990 when the NFL pulled Super Bowl XXVII due to Arizona's unwillingness to recognize MLK day. A similar action by Major League baseball would send a very loud, very clear message.
The 2011 All Star Game is scheduled to take place on July 12, 2011 in Chase Stadium, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Concerted action by players and fans could force a change of venue.
It is important to remember that at least 27% of players in the Major league are Hispanic and the list of Major League players from other countries is impressive. Major League Baseball has become a beacon of opportunity to many young people from many backgrounds.
How will these players feel when their right to be in Arizona is challenged? Will police be checking their papers to avoid lawsuits by opposing fans?
The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has the ability to
put pressure on the League to change the venue of the 2011 All-Star Game, but efforts must begin immediately. A few heartfelt letters to some of the best baseball players in the nation might help get this ball in motion.
UPDATE: Whoops just saw several other diaries with the same idea. I will delete if there are no new comments.
