Let me start by saying that I respect the needs and reasons of those who have cut their cable off and those who have done without TV for years and are happy doing so. I honestly understand that we all find our way when it comes to which media and where we allow it in our lives.
However, I would NEVER dream of telling you who have cut their cable, and thrown out their TVs to re-instate both, for reasons I think are important or relevant to me. So frankly, I’m getting sick and tired of hearing you tell me, every time any of us have a complaint about the MSM via TV, that we just need to cut and run. We just need to not bother ourselves with it, and we are some kind of suckers for doing so.
Yeah, I’m really tired of that.
Let me start first, on a totally non political note, with the fact that I think TV has NEVER been better, or offered more, and much of that I find on cable. I could spend a long time here listing all the series I have enjoyed on cable and why. Things that have nothing to do with politics per say, but have much more relevance than most of what I see presented to me at the movie theaters these days. Things that are more subtle, that demand some investment. Things that are not all about huge effects and blowing things up. Things that give hope to new actors, and older actors thrown away by Hollywood, and by older, I mean if you’re a woman, over 30, just for starters.
Now, let’s move on to the political. I too read A LOT on line, but I consider it important, for me, to see what TV news has to say, as this is where most people are still getting their information. I pick and choose where I watch, and yeah, sometimes what I watch pisses me off, and I might write about it in a comment or a diary.
And darn it, every time I do, I get comments telling me that I’m wrong to even submit myself to TV news, particularly cable, and all would be well if I just cut myself off of it.
Well, I just don’t see it that way. To me, this is people telling me to fit into their bubble of NO TV, and certainly NO cable TV---when I would never dream of telling them to get out of THEIR bubble and freaking turn the TV back on and see what YOU are missing, if you choose carefully.
Look, we all find our way to keep up these days. For those who DO watch TV news/cable news, then I think we should be encouraged to comment on it, pro and con, without being told we need to unplug to relieve ourselves of the displeasure of disagreement.
We all pick and choose where and how we get our information. We hopefully all add in what we’ve learned by doing so.
But to wind up where I began, PULEEEEEEEEEEZE stop telling me to cut my cable or throw out my TV, just because I don’t like everything I see on it. I have good reasons to keep both. I trust for those of you happy without TV or cable, you have your reasons too. So please, trust I have mine.
And frankly, there needs to be those here who DO comment on what’s happening on cable news, as unhappy as we might be about it. NONE OF US, no matter our preferences for news, can afford to stick our heads in the sand these days.
