Not that I'm a fan of this 'very circular' sporting event -- but what was happening behind the scenes at this traditional holiday event, was 'news-worthy' nonetheless ...

Scott arrives at Daytona, but Crist shadow lingers

by George Diaz on En Fuego, orlandosentinel.com -- July 5, 2014

DAYTONA BEACH -- NASCAR welcomed Gov. Rick Scott as an honorary race official for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway on a drizzly Saturday night.
[...]

Crist was set to be represented in six spots on the car. The phrase "Charlie Crist for Florida" was featured prominently across the hood of the car before the decals were scrapped Friday afternoon. [...]

The original agreement caused quite a ruckus. The Republican Party of Florida filed a complaint with the elections commission, arguing that putting Crist’s name on the hood is a violation of the $3,000 limit on campaign contributions.
[...]

But even though his name disappeared from the car, Charlie Crist kept popping up in the 24-7 news cycle buzz. So in the end, Crist got a ton of free publicity without any of his supporters paying a cent.

SOOOO ... Rick Scott can act an "honorary race official" -- and his would be challenger Charlie Crist, can't even get a friggin Decal on a few race cars ???

Give me a break.  Give Floridians a break too ...

If that weren't hypocritical reason enough, to send the corporatist governor of Florida packing -- here are a few more ...

Robert Mongomery: Rick Scott: Will Florida Do It Again

by Robert Mongomery, Progressive Editorialist; metrojacksonville.com -- July 5, 2014

The election of Rick Scott as Governor of Florida, was a masterful move of one millionaire to guile a majority of people hoping for a political outsider that would espouse the virtues of God and limited government. He is a bald headed white guy willing to say all of the right things at the right time, and in a language people, who like to refer to themselves as conservatives, want to hear. What they got was a corporatist who would champion the cause of deep south politics, “Tea Party Style”, and the former employee of George W Bush would bring the state into a new age of crony-corporatist government with a little verbal nods to Christianity and covert bigotry for good measure.

[...] Who’d have thought “so many” drug abusers would be removed from welfare rolls by such a masterful move. It was reported that roughly 108 of 4086 people on state welfare failed drug testing, and has, by reports cost the state roughly $400,000 for reimbursing the fee charged and the resulting legal battles with the ACLU that led to Scott’s law being stricken earlier this year. [...]

As most, so called, Conservatives, Rick Scott is also the education governor who would liberate the children of Florida from the tyranny of union thug teachers and federal education mandates. His answer: charter schools.  [...] But the move towards privatization of schools isn’t going to stop at public rejection. SB 850 -- still on the table -- has been addressed currently by the Florida Education Association in an open letter calling for Scott to veto it as unfair in that public funds will be allocated to unaccountable private schools at the expense of public schools. So, in other words, it isn’t acceptable to take public funds to expand Medicaid, or to build a high speed rail, but it is okay for the public to fund religious schools.

[... 'it' continues ...]

Scott's conversion of Florida -- into the kind of place conservatives all want to live.

A place without drug-abusing free-loaders;

A place with more publicly-funded private schools;

A place where at one of the most American Institutions (Daytona International Speedway) -- Campaign finance laws are strictly upheld.

A vote for Scott is a vote for more of the same -- a vote for the kind of place conservatives will 'feel safe'.

Safe from the American Takers. Otherwise known as you and me, and that liberal behind that ACLU tree.

A vote for Charlie Crist would be a vote for restoring 'common sense'. And making Florida a great place -- for everyone once again.

And not just the Conservatives' chosen few ...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
